How can i proplong the usefull life of a batery?

What’s best for a LiON battery like the ones MP3 players use: Let it be completely discharged and charging it fully every time or not letting it go below half charge? I don’t want it to be like those cell phones batteries that say they’re fully charged but don’t last a couple of hours.
Are there any other tricks, besides charging it a certain way?

For Lithium ion batteries, it is best *not* to fully discharge. There is no memory effect like with Nicads, so the capacity does not decrease because the battery was not fully discharged.

A lithium ion battery begins to lose capacity (significantly) at about 2 years from manufacture date. There’s nothing you can do to change that … it’s the physics of it.

It also begins to lose charge (moderately) after about 200 charge cycles.

I get good life from mine by recharging fully when the battery is low, but not fully discharged. Don’t interrupt the charge cycle, or it counts as another charge cycle.

  2. Get mAh batteries w/ charger at Target or Best Buy for like $15. These batteries have the longest life, and you can recharge them like 1,000 times. I’ve saved a shiatload by buying these. I don’t know why people still buy regular batteries.
